Day 34: Love for the City
Saturday
And when Jesus drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace!”
~Luke 19:41-42
Many Christians today are caught up in the allure and the sinful pleasures of city life. Others are disgusted and repulsed by the “filth and carnality” of the city. Jesus was neither. When He saw the city, His heart broke, and He felt compassion. He literally wept over the city’s rejection of His peace. And He prayed over the city, even while going to lay down His life for it.
Call to Action: Join others from church for a prayer walk around your neighborhood or organize your own. Ask God to transform lives in ways only He can. Put feet to your prayers by inviting several friends to join you for a Sunday worship celebration.
- As you move about the city, what is most alluring to you? What is most disgusting? How do you think Jesus would view these same things?
- Who are your neighbors that you could invite to church?
- Relational neighbors:
- Geographic neighbors:
- Vocational neighbors:
- Shared interest neighbors:
Lord Jesus, knowing that many non-believers would attend church if they were just invited by a friend, I ask you to make me that friend. Rather than running from or reveling in the brokenness of my city, cause me to weep with mercy over it. For Christ’s sake, Amen.
