Day 19: Engagement
Friday
But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
~Jeremiah 29:7
Our responsibility is not simply to engage with our community on behalf of God. We are also to engage with God on behalf of our community. We must go beyond the small-mindedness of self-centered requests. Eyeing the advance of God’s kingdom, we must tune in to the concerns of our community and be diligent in presenting these needs to God. His provision for the situation will often recruit the service of our hands, but the process begins on our knees.
- Think about your neighbors and neighborhood. What needs do you observe that you can bring to God in prayer?
- Think about the marginalized in your community. How can you pray for them?
- What step will you take today to become better informed of the needs of your community?
Loving Father, thank you for listening to our prayers. Holy Spirit, thank you for leading us into what we ought to pray. Precious Jesus, thank you for caring for the least of these. Direct my eyes to see the needs around me; and incline my heart to both pray and work for the welfare of my neighbors. For Christ’s sake, Amen
