Day 5: Engagement
Friday
Sing to the LORD, all the earth!
Tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised,
and he is to be feared above all gods.
~1 Chronicles 16:23-25
Humans are made to praise. Whether it’s a favorite song, a sports highlight, a gym, or a new restaurant, we can’t help telling other people what’s great about the things we enjoy. As C.S. Lewis put it, “All enjoyment spontaneously overflows into praise unless (sometimes even if) shyness or the fear of boring others is deliberately brought in to check it.”
If we struggle to worship God—the most worthy Object of our praise in the universe—maybe it’s because we haven’t really enjoyed Him. Perhaps we’ve never even looked and recognized how worthy He is. For a reminder of what makes God supremely praiseworthy, read a Psalm (like 145) and reflect on the attributes and actions of God you see there.
- What things in your life do you praise?
- What attributes or actions make God worthy of your enjoyment and praise?
Show me your glory, God. Help me to see you more clearly and to enjoy you more fully. I praise you for [fill in the blank with your list above], and I want to see more! For Christ’s sake, Amen.
Bonus Tracks! Each day, we invite you to worship along with a specific song that fits the theme of the day. And here’s our entire current playlist on either Spotify or Youtube.
