Day 30: Rule of Scripture

And Jesus said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!”

Every generation faces the danger of supplementing Scripture with religious traditions and personal opinions that contradict God’s Word. We may even give more weight to our ideas than to God’s. And in doing so, we claim greater wisdom and authority than God Himself. The simple (but very challenging) solution is to examine our traditions and opinions regularly and to submit our lives to the rule of Scripture over and over again.
- Read Mark 7:1-13. How was the religious crowd invalidating the Word of God? How do you do the same thing?
- Do you knowingly hold to any personal opinions or practice any behaviors that contradict the clear teaching of Scripture? What are they? What are you saying by doing this?
- How will you exalt the supreme and unique authority of Scripture in your life today?
Lord Jesus, as in love as I am with my own opinions, traditions, and established practices, you’ve given me something far better – you’ve shown me the mind of God. Forgive me for my pride of trying to do life on my own terms. Teach me to hold loosely to my ideas and to hold fast to yours. I love your Word. For Christ’s sake, Amen.
