Day 23: Rule of Scripture
Tuesday
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.
~Joshua 1:8
Many of us have memorized hundreds of lines from songs, TV shows, and movies. Random events in our lives inevitably trigger some quote or jingle.
God intends that his Word be in our minds and on our tongues in that same way. The more we know the Word, the more we see the world as God sees it.
Today, you’re going to memorize Scripture. Choose one of the following verses that you haven’t already memorized (or select another verse from this devotional guide):
- Joshua 1:9
- Hebrews 12:1
- Romans 8:1
- Romans 8:28
Read the verse 10 times, carefully focusing on each word. Write it on a note card or Post-It. (Writing it out by hand makes it more memorable.) Cover up your Bible and note card, and try reciting the verse. Check it and repeat. Test yourself a few times throughout the day. Practice again tomorrow and each day until it becomes as memorable as a movie quote.
You can make a habit of memorizing Scripture. Use verses from your personal Bible study, Gospel Community, and/or Sunday sermons. Or get an app like Fighter Verses for your phone to help you choose verses and structure your practice.
Spirit of God, imprint your words upon my soul and transform me through their inherent worth. For Christ’s sake, Amen.
